Going for what we really want: Don’t worry about the “how”.

know how

Many people are pretty good about determining what they want and defining their goals.  People set goals they feel are realistic and then work toward accomplishing them. They determine all the necessary steps to move from point A to point B and then work hard completing task after task on their action item list until their goal is reached.

But...

What if the goal you really desire is so big and so far from where you currently are that you can’t even envision how you could possibly reach it? Are you being unrealistic and just a mere dreamer?  Should you only pursue those goals that you feel you could realistically achieve?  Is it important to only set goals where you can imagine the path to how they will be accomplished?

The alternaview:

The alternaview is that you don’t need to worry about the “how”, you just need make certain you are going after things you genuinely desire that are aligned with your strengths. If there is something you feel at your core you were meant to do, you should pursue it even if you feel that it is too lofty of a goal.   Don’t put artificial limits on yourself…think big and dream big.  You will be amazed at what you are really capable of accomplishing once you start seeing and really believing in your potential to achieve without limits.

There are many steps we will need to take and many things we will need to learn as we move down the path to accomplishing big things.  However, one of the first and most crucial steps after you determine what you really want, is really believing in your ability to accomplish it. We have to go on a mission to clear away all doubts and eliminate any uncertainties. We have to work at getting rid of self imposed limits that taint our confidence.  This can be a very long process, but in order to achieve anything, we have to focus on clearing away everything that prevents us from succeeding.

How many times have you thought about something you really wanted to accomplish, but then shied away from it because you thought to yourself, “the chances of me really being able to do that are slim” or “that would be nice, but how on earth is that really going to happen”.  This type of thinking puts artificial limits on our ability to achieve and when these types of thoughts appear from time-to-time, we have to take notice of them and then immediately begin to break them apart.

It doesn’t really matter whether or not you can envision how something is going to be accomplished.  It really is not your role to figure out how things will fall into place. You just need to have confidence in your ability to achieve your desire and that means you have to remove all doubts.  When we first figure out what we really want to do it can be difficult to even see the path to success.  Often times when we can’t envision the path we allow that to create doubts and before you know it we have determined something is unrealistic or beyond what we could really do.

We may have to really search to identify these doubts because often times they are subtle or overlooked because we do have a good amount of confidence.  However, we need more than just a good amount of confidence, we need absolute confidence and that means we have to remove every single doubt.  In many ways it is like weeding your flower garden.  It is not that there aren’t any flowers, but rather that there are some weeds around the flowers that have to be removed.

Now there are obviously other steps that are required in order to accomplish what we really desire, but one of the most important initial steps is to eliminate any limiting thoughts.  After we are able to do that, things will begin to evolve and to fall into place.  We will be guided in the right direction.  We don’t need to determine how things will happen, but we do need to develop the right mindset so that they can unfold.

How to use this alternaview:

1.  Determine what you really want. What are your real desires?  What do you want to accomplish?  Has there always been something that you felt you would be good at and were meant to do?  You need to ask yourself questions and not put any limits on your responses.

2.  Be on the lookout for doubts. Doubts will sometimes creep up on you or they may be so hidden that you don’t recognize them.  Are you 100% confident that you can accomplish your desire?  If the answer is no, then you still have doubts that must be cleared away.  If the answer is yes, then you may have some doubts that are being disguised or overlooked.  Listen to the thoughts that are running through your mind and be on the lookout for any doubts or negative thoughts.  If you do notice them, begin immediately to break them down.  Consistently reassure yourself that you can achieve what you desire.

3.  Believe your desire exists for a reason. If you have asked yourself the right questions and arrived at a point where you have a genuine desire, then understand there is a reason for your desire.  If you have genuinely and honestly determined what it is you really want and come up with a desire that is aligned with who you are and your purpose, then you can be assured that you were meant to accomplish your desire.  There is a reason your desire exists and that in and of itself should provide you with confidence to go after it and achieve it.  Ideas are not just put into our heads so that we can dream about them.  We really are supposed to act on ideas and pursue them until they become a reality.

Conclusion

Everyone should have at least one big dream in their mind that they are focusing on continually.  It doesn’t matter if you understand how you could ever achieve it or how it could become a reality.  It just matters that you open your mind to the potential of it being accomplished…that is the alternaview.

  1. Hi Sibyl.

Hey I like this here. Forgetting about the how saves us a bunch of wasteful thinking. We figure out the how during the process anyway, so trying to plan for all the how's beforehand is not valuable because some of those might not be used, or some are too complex or simple for the task, or so on.

I also like the point about keeping an eye out for doubts. If we aren't watching, a doubt can creep up in our thoughts and then make us too weak to act, but if we are vigilant before that, we can squash it when it shows up in a small form, and maintain our focus.

I'd say our desires sure do exist for a reason.

    • @Armen: You are so right about the fact that when you don't worry about the "how", you save a lot of unnecessary thinking. Sometimes you really do just have to let go and trust the process. Thanks for always sharing your comments here. --Sibyl

  2. Hi Sibyl, I just found your site and really like your perspective. I'm totally with you on putting vision before mechanics. I find that when I focus on "figuring it out," I make myself miserable and full of fear. When I focus on the vision, what I want, and keep taking steps (small, incremental, easily manageable steps), I don't just reach the vision, it's often much better than I've even imagined. Thanks for your post.

    • @Linda: Welcome to the alternaview. It's great to have you commenting here. I think that is a good way to put it..".vision before mechanics". That really is what it is all about. You really don't have to figure everything out because as long as you focus on the vision, everything else falls into place. Thanks for the comment.

  3. great stuff, Sibyl! sometimes we ourselves can be our most challenging obstacle to getting whatever we want and when we just go for it, we realize everything thats suppose to happen just does.

    • @Rocky: Thanks for the comment. You are so right that sometimes we ourselves can be our biggest obstacle. It really is all about getting out of our own way. Also, really liked the post about the mountain on your blog. I thought it was poignant. Have a good one. Sibyl - alternaview

  4. Hello Sibyl

Thanks for saying "if there is something you feel at your core you were meant to do." Returning to the core of who we really are is key to understanding what we want. And the core of who we really are is rooted in the awareness that we can be what we are meant to be - that our unique essence is meant to be expressed. I just found your site through a comment you left, and am very glad to have discovered you. My recent blog post was about sounding your unique note in the world. I very much appreciate the opportunity for sharing our positive perspective and I look forward to staying in touch. http://www.energydoorways.com/blog/natural-energy-wisdom/catrien-ross-on-sounding-your-unique-note-in-the-world/

    • @Catrien: Welcome to the alternaview. It is great to have you here. I read your post about sounding your unique note in the world and it is very much aligned with this post and the thought that we should all be doing what we feel at our core we were meant to do. It is a great post by the way. I particularly thought the line "My frequency is an essential note in the harmonic whole" was poignant. Thank you so much for the very insightful comment.
