How to avoid being discouraged: Recognize there is no such thing as a setback

Have you ever experienced a time when you were making progress at something, moving in the right direction and then WHAM…something undesired happens and you feel that now you are regressing? What you desire or want to accomplish is now even farther away. It is easy to classify this as a misstep and a setback.
The alternaview:
The alternaview is that there is no such thing as a setback.
There is nothing that happens that sets us back, but rather the problem we really have is we have characterized something as negative, which really is working for our better good. What has really surfaced is a situation that is designed to propel us forward and we just need to be able to recognize it for what it is. Something has arisen in order to grab our attention so that we will look at things differently and be better prepared in the future to take a quantum leap in the direction we desire.
We are really just preparing to move forward and the challenge is being able to view all situations that would lead us to believe otherwise from this different perspective. Once we are really able to understand and appreciate that what we are classifying as setbacks are really preparations for advancement and for the future, we will be less apt to have such a negative view on them and allow them to discourage us. We may not always welcome them, but we will realize they are a helpful reminder that we need to approach and look at things differently. We will understand that it is really a message to make us more successful in the long run, and not something that will prevent us from going where we are trying to go.
So, if you currently feel you are experiencing a setback or if one arises in the future, don’t fall into the common trap and view it as something negative and discouraging. Step back and look at things from another perspective. Realize it is a reminder that you may need to analyze your current approach and what you are doing. Understand that in one way or another you are being positioned for the success you asked for…that is the alternaview.

Rocky | R O C K O N O V A . COM´s last blog ..Why You Should Never Settle For Anything Less Than What You Truly Want
@Rocky: It seems it is always those rough weekends that really test the strength of our beliefs and viewpoints. The good thing about them is that after we make it through them and are still persevering, we know we are one step closer to where we need to be. I think it is important to remind ourselves of those things that will continue to help us push forward and get through those weekends. I am glad to hear you made it through yours and thanks for the comment and visiting the alternaview. Sibyl
Sibyl, from Japan, thanks for another supportive post, especially your advice to step back and view things from another perspective. What we view as a setback is often an opportunity to reassess the situation so that we can turn it totally around. And a setback can create the inward-looking mood that allows us to listen for the intuition that offers us a more creative solution. As you say, setbacks are really just steps on the journey toward success.

@Catrien: Thanks for the comment. It is good to know you agree and I really thought what you said about setbacks allowing us to listen for intuition and more creative solutions was a very important point. Sometimes it really is all about reevaluating and listening to things that you may have otherwise overlooked. Hope all is well in Japan. Sibyl
