How to organize your way into the life you want

Oversight

When you think about your life and all you are trying to accomplish, it becomes apparent that one of the major things we are working toward is creating the conditions in life that will allow for continual improvement and life unfolding the way it was meant to.  It is not that we are not content and happy with where we are, but rather that we realize we are capable of creating a life that gets better and better.

Many people will suggest that life is complex and it is difficult to know exactly what will create those ideal conditions.  There are so many things we can focus on in order to improve our lives and so it can be challenging to figure out a good approach.

The alternaview:
The alternaview is that we can actually create the ideal conditions that will set our lives up to continually get better and better by being absolutely organized.

Organized?

Now, I am sure you have heard all the benefits of organizing your work space, homes, files, etc. and organizing your life most certainly requires you to organize everything around you.  However, in addition to what normally comes to mind when talking about organization, organizing your life requires you to take things a little farther.  It requires you to extend your organization scheme to the other things in your life and specifically the five major aspects of your life.

It requires that we have thought through the five major aspects of life and have clarity in terms of the direction we are going.  It is not that we have all the answers, but we do know what we want in terms of our (1) goals and desires, (2) physical condition/health, (3) relationships with friends and family, (4) spirituality and (5) financial well being.  We have taken the time to think through and organize our thoughts and we have worked to develop a plan to get us where we want to be. It doesn’t mean we are rigid or unwilling to adapt our plan, but rather that we have organized our life in such a way that we have a good roadmap and are able to start moving in the direction we desire in the five major aspects of life.

The reality is that we really can integrate organization into all aspects of our life and see amazing benefits from doing so.
Why?

Because the vast majority of us are more than capable of taking the time and devoting the required thought that is necessary to determine the direction we want to move in life and what our ultimate goals are.  The problem is usually that people haven’t really taken the time and done what is required to honestly explore these big questions.  They haven’t devoted serious thought and consideration to figuring things out and so by default they fall into the trap of moving through life aimlessly.

However, once we have figured out our initial direction and have taken the necessary time to explore our thoughts and what we want with respect to each of the five aspects of life, we are able to develop real action plans and just leaning in the direction we want to go allows things to begin to unfold.  We can begin to see things fall into the place and additional information, answers and guidance starts appearing for us to take notice of. We have developed an organized direction and approach for everything in life that we need (I mean, after you figure out your desires and plans for your goals, physical condition/health, relationships, spirituality and financial well being…what else is there?  You have covered it all).

It is easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life and feel a little overwhelmed because there is always a lot going on.  We are all usually working and focusing on one thing or another.  That is where organizing your life comes into play because we are able to step back and see the bigger picture with greater clarity.  We are able to see the major pieces of our life and declutter our mind and our thoughts so that we are able to focus in a disciplined way that allows us to realize our desires.

How to use this alternaview:
1. Organize everything around you.
Organize your home, your work space, your car, your files and anything else that you come into contact with.  There really is something to be said about having everything around you organized.  It really is an important part of the process and you will absolutely feel better and be in a better position to organize the other aspects of your life once you have organized everything around you.  There are so many good books and posts on organizing your space and you should really put into practice this advice.  Check out this one at Zen Habits.

And this one at Dumb Little Man…

2.  Organize your thoughts and goals around the 5 aspects of life. Really take the time and think through the five major aspects of life.  What do you want to accomplish with respect to each of these major aspects? What are you good at?  What feels right?  Think through each of these aspects and write down your goals and the direction you want to move in.  Create real plans and roadmaps that will allow you to achieve your desires.  Make sure to write down everything and continually revise and update your plan.

3.  Move, move move. You have to devote the time and effort and act upon your plans and organizing every aspect of your life.  It is easy to make the excuse that you just don’t have the time to do it or that you will get to it tomorrow.  Don’t procrastinate or make excuses.  You need to be serious about organizing your life and willing to devote time to working against your plans everyday.

4.  Recognize the benefits. The process of organizing your life is not one that is going to happen overnight so you have to continually focus on the benefits so that you can remain motivated and disciplined.  You can be guaranteed that if you have really thought through the 5 major aspects of your life and your plans, and are working against your plans, this organized approach will undoubtedly create the conditions in your life that allow it to continually improve.

Who would have thought that something so easy like organization could provide so many benefits in life?  It really is all about organizing life in such a way that the clutter and the confusion continually disappear and we are able to see everything with better clarity and successfully move the direction we should…this is the alternaview.

Have you organized your life? Is this an alternaview you agree with?

  2. @Rocky: Just like you said, sometimes you really do just have to get up and move right. Move, move move...nice and easy and also in line with your new year's resolution of simplicity right? Admittedly, sometimes it is easier said than done, but if we can find a way to continually have that motivation to keep things moving, we create the space for everything to fall into place. Thanks for the comment and that was a good post you wrote on the Hangover.

  3. Thanks Alternaview, I'd like to add, my mantras
    1) "Let it Go, whether it be emotional stuff, attachments to "things", attitudes and things that hold us back.

My other one is "Plan the life, live the plan" - taking the time to think about how you want your life to be, and then working towards it. It can be very satisfying and fulfilling.

  4. @Donna: I really like that..."Plan the life, live the plan". That is a good one and a great continual reminder to do what you need to do. The other mantra of letting it go is also so important because we can easily get caught up in the distractions. I am actually hoping to post on that exact topic very soon. Thanks for sharing your mantras and the great comments.

  5. Seriously! This is so enlightening, and couldn't have come at a better time! I'll take it as a sign! Thank you!
