How to successfully move through life: you should either be determining or fulfilling your purpose

We all have things that we do well and that we were meant to do. Everyone has a purpose in life. How many times have we all heard that?
That is because it really is true. Everyone does have a purpose and there is a unique thing each of us should be doing in our own way.
What are the implications of that reality? Since everyone really does have a purpose, what does that mean and how does that affect how we should move through life?
The alternaview:
The alternaview is that since we know everyone has a purpose, either (1) you should be working to determine your purpose or (2) you should be fulfilling your purpose. You should be doing one of these things or the other because if you are doing neither, it means you are not moving in the right direction. It really is that simple and that is a good thing. If you are interested in moving in the right direction, you only really have two choices. Things are really not as complicated as they may appear. Life is just not that confusing and there are essentially two ways you should be moving through life depending on your particular circumstance.
The Options: You should be focusing either on option 1 or option 2, and the goal is to ultimately complete both.
(1) Determining your purpose: If you feel that you have not figured out what your purpose is, you should be spending time and doing everything you can to understand what your specific purpose is.
- Ask questions.
- Work on connecting the dots.
- Determine what your strengths are; how should they impact your purpose?
- What are you doing? What should you be doing? What are you interested in?
- What have you already learned? What are you interested in learning?
- Look at everything you can and figure out your purpose.
Yes, this may be easier said than done, but if we haven’t determined what our purpose is, we have to take the time to figure out exactly what it should be, even if it takes years. If we don't, we will end up spinning through life and not really going much of anywhere.
However, if you have figured out your purpose, then it is time to move on to…
(2) Fulfilling your purpose: Everything you do should be aligned with fulfilling your purpose. We should make certain that we are continually doing those things that move us in the right direction and help us do what we were meant to do.
- Develop a plan to fulfill your purpose (but be open to it changing and evolving).
- Learn everything you can about things connected to your purpose.
- Focus your efforts and what you do on your purpose?
- Be passionate and devoted to your purpose (if it is the right purpose for you, this should be easy)
- Continue to connect the dots and to learn about yourself and your purpose.
- Be open to it changing and evolving.
How to use this alternaview:
1. Figure out if you really know what your ultimate purpose is. If you feel that you have successfully identified your purpose, then the majority of your attention and energy should be spent on fulfilling your purpose. If you feel that you are still waiting for the pieces of life to come together and that you need some additional clarity on what your purpose is, then the majority of your attention and energy should be spent on identifying your purpose.
2. Understand your purpose may change over time. It’s okay and almost to be expected, if what you feel your ultimate purpose is evolves, expands and even changes over time. It just means that your understanding has developed and that you have more clarity about what you should be doing. You are going to be changing and growing throughout life, so it is not unexpected that your purpose may also change. Be open to that occurring and don't hold tight to what you initially thought was your purpose just because it is where your journey began.
3. Realize that until your purpose connects to and benefits other people in some way, it is not your ultimate purpose. Your purpose in many ways is a work in progress. As you go through life and learn more and more (which is why you must be open to your purpose changing, expanding and evolving), you learn how to put to work all the good things you have come across. The puzzle pieces come together and you really start seeing the bigger picture. In one way or another, your purpose will provide something of value to the people around you. Perhaps it is entertainment or guidance, understanding, support, knowledge...whatever the case may be, know that it will be something important and of value.
4. After you determine your purpose, Do anything and everything humanly possible to fulfill your purpose. Spend time focusing on your purpose and what you should be doing everyday. Organize your life around fulfilling your purpose. It will be fairly easy to develop a good road map once you know what your purpose is. You should align all your efforts and what you do everyday with fulfilling your purpose. It should consume the majority of your focus.
The best thing about coming to the realization that everyone really does have a purpose is that it becomes very clear what you should be doing. It breaks down life into two easy to see pieces. If you don’t know your purpose, then you have to work and figure out what it is; if you do feel that you have identified your purpose, then you have to work on fulfilling it. It really is that easy…this is the alternaview.

I just found your site and I enjoyed this article. I feel I know my purpose presently, and I'm working hard at it. However, working on my purpose makes no money, and there's this little matter of paying the bills, and I'm having a terrible time finding part-time work that generates enough income to keep me in my purpose. Any suggestions? Thanks.
@Justin: Not to sound too "Polyanna", but I really think you have to stay with whatever you are doing if you genuinely feel you have discovered your purpose. That's a really powerful thing and means you are probably on the right track. If you feel good about what you are doing and it just feels right, then there is most likely a very good reason and you should follow your gut instinct. Of course you have to do what you feel is best, but there is something to be said about continually working for what you desire and allowing it to evolve and unfold the way it was meant to. Sometimes that means doing whatever you can to find a way to take care of your current responsibilities, but continually working at what you feel is right and giving it time to fall into place (so that you don't have to struggle and have 3 jobs). I hope that was helpful and thank you so much for the comment. Welcome to the alternaview. I am glad you enjoyed the article. Sibyl
