Just Do You…BUT, Do it right.

leap across the void

Many people are on a search to improve and develop personally.  They are committed and open minded to different guidance and information.  There are millions and millions of articles, books, blogs and information available that will give that guidance and advice on how to best personally develop.  They are loaded with practical tips and a lot of this information is useful, but it is easy to get lost in it and potentially overwhelmed because there is so much available to choose from.  It would literally be impossible to try and do everything and follow every piece of advice.

The alternaview:

The alternaview is that the best thing to do is to “just do you”.  It is not that you ignore and don’t incorporate some of the information and advice that is available, but rather that you determine what works best for you.  You get to choose and you should choose what advice to follow.  All advice is not for everyone because people are different and things will work better for one type of person than it will for another.  You have to determine for yourself what works best because you really are the only person that is capable of figuring that out.

The key is that we have to be committed to finding that perfect path and doing those things that work for us.  We have to be diligent in our search and read and try as many things as we need until we identify exactly what it is we personally need.  Once we identify those things that just seem to be right on point for us, we then need to commit and dedicate our efforts to incorporating those things into our lives.

There are so many different paths to success and if you are genuinely focusing and committed to improving, you will continue to grow and develop.  You just have to be willing to comb through all the different information and be very disciplined when it comes to incorporating it into your life.

When we genuinely want to integrate this alternaview into our life:

1.  Just do you…Mentally. Figure out what practices and things you want to incorporate into your life that will allow you to manage conflict and challenges that may arise in your life.  The problem with challenges and issues is not that they arise, but rather that we haven’t developed the necessary skill set to work through them.  Life is filled with so many things that could annoy, frustrate, disappoint, anger, and upset us at just about any point.  The choice is always ours as to how we respond and how we view those situations.  We just have to find those things that work best for us…meditation, massages, exercise, yoga, religion, spirituality, relaxation, deep breathing, patience, etc., some or all of these things.  We need to make certain we know all the tools that work best for us and that we remain committed to using them to maintain our peace of mind.

2.  Just do you…Intentionally.  Don’t do life by default or just fall into one thing or another.  Really take the necessary time to determine what you want and desire to have in your life and then focus on making it a reality.  Set goals, have dreams, and work toward getting everything that you really want.

3.  Just do you…Professionally. Find out what career or job exists that works best for you, your interests and your passion and then find a way to do it.  There are jobs or things you can do that you will just feel more attracted to and are better suited to do.  Your profession is something that may change and evolve over time.  Yes, you may really feel like you want to do one thing and then end up changing your mind.  There is nothing wrong with this.  The most important thing to do is to remain committed to the search until you find what feels right.  You will know when you have found it.

4.  Just do you…Relationally. Figure out how to be a great parent, spouse, boyfriend, girlfriend, etc.  You have to determine the best way to interact with the people in your life and support those relationships so they can flourish and grow.  There is so much that we can learn about ourselves and about life from the people in our life and we have to do all we can to make certain we have the best relationships we can possibly have.

5. Just do you…Healthy. Determine exactly what you need to do to feel healthy.  Find those things to eat that make you feel best and healthy.  Figure out the type of exercise that you enjoy.  If you are one of those people that is averse to exercise (that was my problem not so long ago), I promise you there is something out there that you would enjoy.  You just have to figure out what that thing is.

There is so much out there and available, but one of the most important lessons in life is to learn to find and focus on those things that work for us that will help us get to where we want to be.   It doesn’t really matter what anyone tells us to do because the most important thing is what you figure out works for you. You do have to find your own roadmap and be disciplined enough to continually do those things you should…just do you…this is the alternaview.

Have you found a way to just do you in life?  Is this alternaview already something you do and agree with?

  1. I really loved this. It reminds me of a line from an Alan Jackson song "It doesn't take much, when you've got enough. Living on love"
And yes, I already have an alternaview . You can read about it here http://burlapnbeads.com/2009/08/15/my-philosophy-of-pink/
Love the blog. I'll be adding you to my reader.

  2. @Pamela: Thanks for the comment and welcome to the alternaview. Your post on the Pink song by Aerosmith was really good, and as you said, you definitely already found an alternaview. It is really amazing how things such as songs with the perfect lyrics can come to us at the perfect moment and make us think. I am glad you liked the post.
